#019 – 15th Jun – Botallack Tin Mines, St Ives and Minack Theatre Visits

11.07am – After a really good night’s sleep (we had quite a long day yesterday!), we’re a bit later getting going today. The plan is to drive over to St Ives for a quick look at that most attractive of Cornish tourist destinations. It has rained in the night and is cloudy this morning, so it’s back to long trousers with coats at the ready!

I say ‘quick look’ because we have another busy day today. When we get back from St Ives we need to start preparations for moving-on to Looe tomorrow. We can’t dismantle the awning and put all that stuff in the car because we need seats for four of us this evening when we go to the Minack Theatre to see Romeo and Juliet, but we can still do a fair bit to reduce the number of jobs we have to do in the morning.

1.05pm – We’ve stopped at Botallack on the way to St Ives. There are iconic tin mine ruins here like the ones in Poldark. As a young boy I had a card with little bits of different ores stuck on it from the Botallack mine. It sounded such a magical far-off place to me then. And now, around 60 years later I’m actually here in person!

This is the view I really wanted to see.

2.36pm – We’re now in St Ives and have just ordered some seafood at the Cintra Seafood Bar at the harbour. Getting through the narrow streets to here was probably the most challenging driving experience of my life! The steep cobbled roads were just wider than my car in places and traffic was going both ways! Some of the corners were extremely tight and it was very difficult to get round them without scraping the car. Helen says that she was simultaneously ‘horrified, terrified and narrowly-missed being sick!’ It was quite good fun really!

Somewhat recovered from the driving trauma and waiting for food!
That’s better!
St Ives is lovely!

6.53pm – We’ve arrived at The Minack Theatre near Land’s End and it’s incredibly impressive. We’re in the second row from the front – amazing seats! However. I’m not looking forward to the climb all the way back up!

We’re all the way down at the front!
All the world’s a stage, and we’re certainly close to this one!

10.23pm – Back at the caravan after another long day. The production of Romeo and Juliet was superb and the weather remained mild for us. During the second half it felt as though it might rain, but thankfully it held off.

It still wasn’t fully-dark by the end.
We had a great evening at the Minack!

Ps. The climb back up wasn’t too bad – phew!
