10.50am – By ‘eck it’s hot here in Tewkesbury today! (Have I mentioned that already?). Helen and I had a very uncomfortable night – the temperature only fell to around 22°C (and was probably hotter-still in the caravan) and it’s on its way up to around 32°C here again today. I’m not sure what our aspirations are for the day – other than to stand against the freezer cabinets in the local Morrisons perhaps!
Ps. I’ve finally just figured-out how to put a degrees symbol (°) in my posts, so you can expect lots of temperature updates today!
2.20pm – We’re currently sitting at the Riverside Cafe in Tewkesbury. It’s 30°C but there is an intermittent breeze which is very welcome. We’ve decided to go on a pleasure boat cruise on the River Avon which flows through the town on its way towards Stratford amongst other places. We just missed the most recently-departed cruise but the next one is only thirty-five minutes from now. Time for an iced latte and a piece of cake for Helen!
4.10pm – We’ve just come back to the caravan following a really enjoyable boat trip up the Avon. There were only the skipper, Helen and me on the boat and we learned a lot of local history and useful information about Tewkesbury from the very knowledgeable and chatty (Glaswegian) skipper. He told us about how severe some of the floods have been in recent years, including ‘the big one’ in 2007 and about the Battle of Tewkesbury which was one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses which was fought here in 1471. And to come right up to date, we also got a number of good pub and restaurant recommendations, which may well come in handy for this evening!
It’s still very warm here at the moment (28°C), but one whole side of the caravan is giving us very useful shade now, and there is still a slight breeze.
7.38pm – We’ve just had a salad evening meal courtesy of Morrisons. I went to buy a cooked chicken and some potato salad but the shelves had been completely stripped bare – no cooked chicken, rotisserie-style or otherwise, and no potato salad. Helen had the very last piece of cooked salmon in the shop and I had some smoked mackerel and prawns. It’s not the final meal of the holiday we’d planned but it did the job.
We’re sitting in the shade of the caravan and it’s finally quite an acceptable temperature. Not so inside the van however where it is still like a sauna!
As we’re leaving for home in the morning we’ll be doing a few packing-up jobs this evening. The front travel-cover needs to go back on the van for a start, and I need to pack-up all my clothes (they’re not all in the laundry by any means; Helen has been very diligent with keeping-up-to-date with our laundry this holiday).
8.34pm – 23°C – nice!
